Beach Boat Bash
With 30 Ways 30 Days in full swing, it looks like Sseko is having a blast in the US.
But don’t you worry! We’re holding down the Fun Fort here in Uganda, too.
And what could be more fun than a boat ride on a sunny Saturday afternoon? How about taking that boat ride with a bunch of women who have never been on a boat before? As you may know by now, Sseko Uganda loves a good excuse to go to the beach. Our annual Christmas party is traditionally held on the shores of Lake Victoria, and this year we gave in and had a summer soiree, too. The party was Part I of my {Julie} goodbye party. But rather than snotty crying and long hugs (which came a few days later at Going Away: Part II), we just had fun at the beach. Moms brought their kiddos, grown women played on the playground, and we laughed. A lot. Nseko does mean laughter, after all.
But I digress. Back to the boat. We took shifts on a charming (read: sketchy/leaking/shifty) little boat. Unlike many of us who grew up going to swim lessons, learning to water ski at the lake, and playing endless rounds of Marco Polo, most of our staff did not. Most don’t know how to swim and are actually pretty scared at the thought of deep water. You know, the kind of water that boats drive in. Waves, splashes and an overloaded boat made for a hysterical scene. See pictures to get a glimpse at the…fun.
Lest you think we are torturing our staff, let it be said that all the women {in retrospect} said they loved the boat ride and want to do it again.
What an adventure!
