Sseko Designs x Elephant Landing

A few years ago, I was asked to speak at a photography conference in Portland. Odd, you see, because I am not a photographer (but this is another matter altogether.) Ethically Sourced Leather Shoes + Bags

We’re often asked where our leather is sourced from, and we are proud to say that almost all of it comes from Ethiopia and Kenya! We work hard to source as many of our materials as possible (from beads to rubber!) in the East African region with the aim of supporting the local economy and community. The tanneries we work with mostly use hides from the animals of small family farmers and growing local businesses. Leather & Livestock in East Africa […]

How It’s Made: The Brave Bracelet

Though the brass bangles have been a Sseko staple for awhile now, we’re incredibly excited to announce our first major foray into the world of jewelry. The Brave Bracelet is entirely handmade in Uganda, using hammered brass wire, colorful beads, and a whole lot of talent. First, brass wire is cut to size, hammered, and then shaped into a dainty geometric diamond. Here, Josephine taps the wires to make sure the diamond shape is laying flat. […]

A Brave Adventure: Josephine’s Uganda Boat Trip

This fall, as we ask you to seek the unfamiliar, it’s only fair that we ask the same of ourselves, both in the U.S. and in Uganda. For Josephine, this meant overcoming her fear of the water in exchange for an exhilarating new experience: a Uganda boat trip on Lake Victoria! Despite the fact that Uganda is a land full of water, from the mighty Nile to Lake Victoria to the smooth, calm pools of mountain craters- most Ugandans don’t know how to swim. Two years ago, when Josephine heard of a few American visitors spending the day touring Lake Victoria [...]

One Sseko Brave’s African Dream

After learning about a current project Sseko Brave Collective member Chido Dhliwayo is embarking on to help her mother publish a book, we were captivated by the story she is telling and the story of her mother, Letwina’s journey. While acclimatizing herself in Portland, Chido attended Portland State University and it was through an internship she had that crossed paths with Sseko. Sseko Designs had brought the documentary “Girl Rising” to Portland and it was there that Chido first learned about Sseko’s mission and ultimately joined the Sseko Brave Collective. It wasn’t long until Chido and Letwina began taking Brave steps together! We [...]

Haley Johnsen is a singer-songwriter from Beaverton, Oregon. You may recognize her from Season 11 of American Idol, but this lady’s come a long way since then! In fact, she just released her debut EP, Through the Blue. Singing has always been a part of her life, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that she decided to dig deep and find the words to go along with the melodies she was hearing in her head. Sseko Turns 6: Lessons We’ve Learned Building an Ethical Fashion Brand

At 22, Liz Bohannon left a comfortable job at a communications agency and moved halfway across the world to make a difference. The Sseko ribbon sandal was born out of her deep-rooted passion to help bright & brave young women pursue their dreams. (And admittedly, some degree of stubborn determination!) In the 6 years that have passed since Liz’s first journey, Sseko Designs has become an internationally-known ethical fashion brand that’s enabled 60 (!!) women to attend college to-date. For Sseko, each birthday represents a pause, a moment of reflection, and a time to give thanks. (We’re still going? And [...]

Having worked with Nikia before and in getting to know her over the past couple years, we’ve learned there is so much more than meets the eye. A Brighter Future: Audrey Roloff

We’ll be highlighting them each on the Sseko blog throughout the summer! To kick us off, we’re highlighting the audacious and striking LA-based blogger Audrey Roloff of aujpoj.com! Favorite Jobs

This past year at the Sseko workshop, things have been busy with the introduction of the new t-strap sandals and a lot of growth. Instead of colorful ribbon straps, these sandals come with carefully hand-beaded accessories, and a whole lot more steps in assembly. This has dramatically changed the way we work, and most days we’re less focused on individual teams and more on Sseko as a whole. The women have learned to be flexible because some days our talented seamstresses find themselves assembling leather sandal straps, or our most expert beaders head over to the other side of the [...]
