BRAVE SPOTLIGHT: HALEY JOHNSEN

Haley Johnsen is a singer-songwriter from Beaverton, Oregon. You may recognize her from Season 11 of American Idol, but this lady’s come a long way since then! In fact, she just released her debut EP, Through the Blue. Singing has always been a part of her life, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that she decided to dig deep and find the words to go along with the melodies she was hearing in her head. As Haley puts it, “I have a knack for teaching children, an uninhibited desire to explore the world around me, and a constant desire to be mindful and intentional in all aspects of my life.” We think you’ll be just as inspired by her as we are, so we asked her a few questions to share with you!

Brave Spotlight: Haley Johnsen | Sseko Designs

How would you describe your personal style?

I would say my style edges on the laid back side of bohemian chick, folky forest fair, and sleek city slicker. I suppose it depends on the season. I am a comfort first kind of gal. My most typical outfits are a baggy sweaters with heeled boots, kimonos with gladiator sandals, or high wasted jeans with a leather jacket.

What piece of the Sseko Brave Manifesto most resonates with you, and why?

The part of the Sseko Brave Manifesto that resonates with me most is “Every great journey begins with a small step”. That quote couldn’t be more relevant for me. As I have gotten older, I have realized that things take time. GREAT things can take an even longer time. The key is to be patient and not lose site of the goal you have set for yourself. It can be difficult and discouraging to view the hundreds of little steps you have to take before the leap, but the landing is so worth it!

This summer we have been talking a lot about taking little steps every day toward creating a brighter future, for both ourselves and for others. What does a “brighter future” look like for you?

My dream for a brighter future is an overall greater sense of kindness and compassion. It can be to a friend, a parent, or a whole community. Love and happiness cannot be spread in vain or cruelty. Kindness and compassion can be shown in so many ways; from a simple compliment to life changing generosity. I hope that for my community, and I hope that for the world.

What is one piece of advice you have for young women?

Love your uniqueness. To not get caught up in what they are not or what they don’t have. We all fall victim to comparisons, especially in this day in age. The sooner we all realize how truly amazing we are, the sooner we can stop being paralyzed by our own self doubt and make a difference in the world as a the bright light we are meant to be.
