Our Story

2009

Sseko began as a way to generate income for high potential, talented young women in Uganda to continue on to university.

2010-2014

Work, work, work! Sseko grew and grew, becoming the largest footwear exporter in East Africa and growing the number of scholarships we can provide.

2015

Sseko Designs appeared on NBC’s Shark Tank and the world fell in love with our versatile strappy Ribbon Sandals, little did they know, Sseko produces so much more!

2016

The Sseko Fellows launched, and for the first time, women all across the U.S. launched their own impact businesses by selling Sseko and styling their communities.

2018

Sseko became a Verified Member of the Fair Trade Federation. As we continue to grow, we believe that being aligned with an organization like the Fair Trade Federation helps our community and our consumers understand and trust just how seriously we take this.

2019

Our global partnership grew! In 2019, we leaned into and developed key relationships in India, building out our apparel collection and diversifying our partners.

2020

In a year of great uncertainty, the only thing that was certain was the grit and grace of our community. We doubled in sales and size thanks to Sseko Fellows, hosts and customers. We were able to keep our artisan teams across the world employed. In 2020, our Fellows took to the internet to host thousands of virtual parties and proved that we truly are #bettertogether.

Did we mention we launched Together Coffee?

2021

After a momentous year of growth, we needed to ‘raise the roof’! Our Uganda team took on a 120-day building project to DOUBLE the size of our workshop in Uganda. Our People + Planet improvements included: onsite rainwater capture, natural cooling, skylights, resting patios, onsite showers, noise-reduced office space, and meticulous landscaping.
